A serious worry spreading throughout the world right now is microplastics. Everyone is wondering what harm can microplastics cause to the human body or environment and what the possible solutions are to this issue. Honestly scientists are just as stumped since very little research has been conducted on microplastics due to the idea of them being new. Though possible causations of microplastics are inflammation, digestive issues, cell damage, lung damage, and risk of cancer. As we also know plastic is made with some toxic chemicals like BPA which can cause disruptions to the body as well. Scientists have also found that nanoplastics which are extremely small pieces of plastic even smaller than microplastics can enter cells and interfere with normal cell functions. Solutions scientists are looking at are higher tech filters, making plastics that biodegrade more safely and shed fewer particles, ocean skimmers, bacteria or enzymes that may help break down some plastics, and limiting some single use plastics. While this is just an overview of the current understandings we have of microplastics hopefully this can help you better understand microplastics.
